To Beep or Not to Beep, that is the question
(White Lines, X-Wings, Stupid People, Regulations, Dragons, Beeping)
Time flies when you’re having fun. Amazingly it’s been 6 years since I last wrote part 5, which is a tad longer than I intended between instalments, and so my apologies to the 471 of you who subscribed for, asked repeatedly for, slowed then stopped waiting for part 6. I wasn’t ignoring you all, I promise. Quite a lot happened in those six years and somewhere along the line, writing about the future slipped rather a long way down the list of other things that absolutely had to be completed in the present. Yet here we are in the future, and rather amusingly, while re-reading the previous episodes, I discovered that I had already started writing this one. Buried in Part 1 of How to Design an Autonomous Car, while explaining why I wanted autonomous cars to exist, primarily to ease the numbness in my backside which has now evolved into Gabapentin soaked sciatica, I complained about finding myself driving at 60 mph, in the rain, in a car weighing several tonnes, towards other cars of similar weight travelling in the opposite direction, driven by relatively untrained people and separated from me by what?
A white line.
Six years later it’s still ridiculous. It always was.
And apologies if you were expecting a discourse on requirements and use-cases in this episode. I may have digressed from my original plan, but a recent conversation with an irate car mechanic, convinced me that this discussion was worth having now.
